Understanding Terminal Blocks

First things first, let’s explain what a Terminal Block is: A terminal block (also called a connection terminal or terminal connector) is a modular block with an insulated frame that secures two or more wires together. They are used in a wide variety of applications where electrical systems need to be safely connected.

Terminal Block Types

There are different types of terminal blocks that can be used. Here are the most common types:

  • Screw Terminal Blocks: These classic blocks use screws to clamp wires in place. They offer a secure connection but can be time-consuming to install.
  • Push-in Terminal Blocks: These blocks feature spring-loaded clamps that allow for quick and easy wire insertion. They are ideal for applications requiring frequent wiring changes.
  • Barrier Terminal Blocks: Designed with physical barriers between terminals, these blocks prevent short circuits and enhance electrical safety.

Terminal blocks offer several advantages:

Electrical Considerations:

Now that you learned about what a terminal block is and the advantages terminal blocks offer, it’s time to learn about what other factors you should consider when selecting the appropriate terminal for your application:

  • Current Rating: Current rating is based on the conductivity of the terminals, cross-sectional area and the corresponding heat rise. Simply put: operating too high of a current can cause overheating and damage to the terminal block. It is best practice to use a terminal block that is rated for at least 150% of the max current that is expected in the system.
  • Voltage Rating: The maximum system voltage of the application must be less than the voltage rating. Any voltage surges in the system should be also evaluated when selecting the terminal block.
  • Pole Count: The pole count is the number of individual circuits within the terminal block. Based on how many individual circuits are needed for the specific application, it can be a single pole or as high as 24 poles and beyond. 
  • Pitch: The pitch of a connector is often determined by the overall rating of the terminal block where factors like voltage/current, creepage, and clearance are considered. Common industry pitches would be (but not limited to) 2.54mm, 3.81 mm, 5.0 mm, and 7.62mm.
  • Wire Size/Type: Making sure that the size of the wire physically fits into the terminal block, as well as what type of wire is extremely important. Stranded or multi-core wires are typically used for screw terminals, and single-core is typically used for push-in style terminal blocks.
