What are Wire Ferrules and why should you use them?

When you hear the word “ferrule” what comes to your mind first? Maybe you think of a wild feral animal like a cat or dog. Or possibly, you think of the actors Will Ferrell or Colin Farrell. However, ferrules are used with countless everyday objects that we rely on, without even realizing it!

Ferrules (also known as bootlace ferrules, wire ferrules, or aderendhülsen) are small metal tubes, commonly made from tin plated copper. They come in various sizes to accommodate different wire gauges. They are carefully slipped over stripped wire and then permanently crimped into place. Once the ferrule is crimped, the wire is able to be inserted into a connector. The primary purpose of a ferrule is to prevent wire strands from fraying, breaking, or unraveling. The reduced dimensions of a ferrule allow the user to effectively terminate wires on high density terminal blocks or very narrow areas.

What does a Ferrule do?

Without a ferrule, the strands of a wire can spread out and become damaged, leading to a poor connection and potential electrical failure. Ferrules reduce contact resistance between the wire and the connector. They also help to minimize the oxidation in the strands due to the lack of air space between them.

Types of Ferrules

Wire ferrules come in different types, each designed to meet different application requirements. Here are the most common types:

  1. Insulated Ferrules: These ferrules feature a plastic collar that covers the metal barrel. The insulation provides additional protection against short circuits and electrical shocks, making them suitable for applications where safety is a concern.

  2. Non Insulated Ferrules: These ferrules do not have a plastic collar. They are typically used in applications where insulation is not necessary or where space is limited.

  3. Twin Wire Ferrules: Twin wire ferrules are designed to accommodate two wires within a single ferrule. They are mostly used in applications where two wires need to be connected to a single terminal.

  4. Color-Coded Wire Ferrules: Color-coded wire ferrules usually come in ferrule kits. The color-coding can help simplify installation and maintenance processes, especially in complex wiring systems.

    Other Types of Ferrules

Ferrules are used in everyday objects. Though they might appear different, they still serve the same function. Some objects that rely on ferrules for their functionality include:

    1. The plastic or metal piece, other known as the aglet, is the piece that is on the end of a shoelace, preventing it from unraveling

    2. The metal piece that binds the bristles or hair of a paint brush to its handle

    3. The rubber or plastic cap at the end of a walking stick or crutch

    4. The metal ring that is crimped to hold the eraser in place on a pencil
